Students Qualify for the 2012 MDOT TRAC Bridge Competition
Ortonville, Michigan, March 15, 2012 - Ninth and Tenth graders from the Brandon STEM Pathways Academy began the challenge of qualifying for the Michigan Department of Transportation Bridge Competition in November. Eighteen students will be representing both the academy and Brandon High School in Lansing, Michigan, on April 30 at the Lansing Center. Students were given the challenge of creating a design portfolio to gain acceptance to the competition where the students will bring their constructed drawbridge to compete against team from all over the state of Michigan. Students will be judged based on their strength to weight ratio of their bridge as well as give a presentation to Michigan Department of Transportation engineers. Students are competing in teams of three in the 9th and 10th grade division. Good luck to our Blackhawks as they take on such an epic engineering challenge.

UMFlint 45th Annual Math Field
The Brandon Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Pathways Academy students competed today at the 45th Annual Match Field Day at the University of Michigan – Flint. Five students from the 9th and 10th grade traveled to the university to compete against some of the top school in the State of Michigan. Events the students competed in were Chalk Talk, Mad Hatter A, Mad Hatter B, Team Essay, Huddle, and the Swiss Game. If you are interested in the full description of the events, visit the University of Michigan – Flint website at http://www.umflint.edu/ and see the math department section of the site. Results will be a posted in the next few days. Students from the academy had a great showing for their first appearance at the competition. Erik Boyle, freshman, took first place out of 24 schools in the Mad Hatter B event. Most of the schools in attendance took junior and senior students and though the team from the academy was young they still fared well against the older teams. The only rule for the competition was that every team had to have at least one sophomore student. The team from the academy took four sophomores and one freshman student to represent Brandon High School. The team consisted of Erik Boyle, James French, Joseph Cupchack, Nathan Zimmerman, and Mathew Jones. The team did a great job and we should all be proud of our Brandon students.

Students learn about Engineering with Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Ortonville, Michigan, February 1, 2012 -- The Brandon Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Pathways Academy learned about hydrogen fuel cells this month. The students experimented using a hydrogen fuel cell car. Students learned a real world application of electrolysis, which produces hydrogen gas from water. They studied the storage, production and uses of hydrogen as alternative energy sources. Students were able to engineer a hydrogen powered car that traveled a complete lap around the first floor of Brandon High School (approximately 1/5 of a mile) in 16 minutes and 10 seconds.
